The Poverello Center

Navigating Solutions with Jill Bonny | Celebrating 50 Years of Hope: The Poverello Center’s Journey

The Poverello Center has been a cornerstone of Missoula for five decades. While some may find it disheartening that homelessness remains an issue after all this time, we believe there’s a more meaningful question to consider: what does it truly mean to solve homelessness?

For us and our partners, solving homelessness means making it a rare and brief experience. We envision a community where anyone facing homelessness can quickly access food, shelter, medical and mental health care, case management, and all other necessary resources, with the ultimate goal of achieving stable housing.

Reflecting on my years at the Poverello Center, one lesson stands out: we can’t do everything for everyone, but we can do something for someone. This mindset shifts us from pessimism to optimism. Instead of asking, “Why haven’t we solved this?” we ask, “What can we do today?”

Over 50 years of providing life-saving and life-changing services, we’ve learned that collaboration is key. We work closely with community partners to address complex situations. We offer warm meals, a safe place to rest, clean laundry, and a listening ear to those in need.

We also celebrate successes. Since last June, our programs and partnerships have made significant impacts. The Johnson Street Shelter and Blue Heron Place, both opened in September, exemplify our efforts. The Johnson Street Shelter serves over 100 people nightly, providing essential resources. Blue Heron Place, in partnership with the Missoula Housing Authority, Partnership Health Center, and Homeword, offers 30 permanent supportive housing units, many occupied by former Poverello Center guests.

We’re inspired by stories like that of a veteran who, with the help of our Homeless Outreach Team, moved from living by the river to the Temporary Safe Outdoor Space operated by Missoula’s Hope Rescue Mission in partnership with United Way. After a month in this supportive environment, he’s thriving and helping others.

This is what 50 years of the Poverello Center represents: the belief that helping our most vulnerable neighbors uplifts the entire community. Challenges are a part of life, but we strive to be a resource when people need us most.

To celebrate our half-century of service, we’re hosting our 50th Anniversary Fundraising Gala, featuring live music, a silent auction, a raffle, and more! Every dollar donated supports our programs and strengthens our community. Purchase your tickets at (https://bit.ly/44qia3O).

Join us in commemorating 50 years of hope, resilience, and community spirit. Together, we can continue making a difference, one step at a time.
