The Poverello Center

Program Spotlight: Resident Volunteers

In 2015, the Poverello Center introduced our Resident Volunteer (RV) Program. This year, we restructured the program to increase its efficacy, and have seen incredible results for the people enrolled.

The RV program is a simple trade: guests staying in the shelter at the Poverello Center or the Johnson Street Shelter donate 20 hours per week to kitchen support, janitorial services, or laundry in return for 24/7 access to the building and an assigned bed. RVs also receive career development and light-touch case management from our Programs Manager, Kristian Stipe.

Kristian shared a story that stood out to him, saying: “Will (name changed for privacy) came to the RV program in early August. He needed some assistance getting his documentation in order. Within about a week of getting his ID, he was employed nearly full time. Within 60 days, he had found stable housing and had achievable financial goals. Will did most of the work himself, but we were able to guide him in the right direction.”

The Poverello Center’s Resident Volunteer program has been a force for change in the lives of many people over the years. Still, since Kristian joined the Poverello Center staff a year ago, the program has grown incredibly. Since March, 9 participants have found housing or employment, and 16 have set up a bank account, many for the first time. This kind of coordinated care for our guests is a priority for the Poverello Center as we move into 2025, and we are so proud to be working towards housing with our guests!
