Every October 10, shelters and service providers around the world recognize World Homeless Day, a day to reflect on our shared mission to address homelessness with compassion and action. This year, the day holds special meaning, as 2024 has brought significant developments for both service providers and the state of homelessness in our communities.
As homelessness rates continue to rise nationwide, service providers are navigating increased demand alongside tightening budgets. This year, the Supreme Court’s rulings on camping in public spaces have introduced new regulatory guidelines, and here in Missoula, a recent ordinance was passed to create more structure around camping. While these changes bring new challenges, they also create opportunities to engage in solutions that bring lasting impact. At the Poverello Center, we’re focusing on hope and collaboration as we look to the future.
We believe that homelessness can be solved, and we see hope all around us: in partnerships like Blue Heron Place and the Missoula Coordinated Entry System, in impactful programs like our Resident Volunteer program, and in supportive housing projects such as the Clark Fork Inn for veterans. We’re grateful to work alongside our city and state partners and the Montana Coalition to Solve Homelessness to ensure that no Montanan goes without essential support.
We’re honored to be part of the solution, knowing this work isn’t easy and the road is long. For 50 years, the Poverello Center has been dedicated to feeding and sheltering Missoulians with dignity, and as we celebrate World Homeless Day, we renew our commitment to creating sustainable housing solutions for all. Together, we can make a lasting difference and move toward a future where everyone has a place to call home.
