Community Spotlight: Montana Coalition to Solve Homelessness

As homelessness and housing insecurity rise in Montana, so do efforts to educate the public about what shelter providers are seeing across the state. In 2022, the Poverello Center spearheaded the formation of the Montana Coalition to Solve Homelessness, made up of stakeholders from across the state. The coalition has united to address the challenges they face and to fight for state government resource allocation toward solving this public crisis. The group includes shelter directors from across Montana, including Helena, Great Falls, Bozeman, Billings, Kalispell, and Missoula. The work accomplished by this team ranges from introducing legislation including a One Time Only Funding Request in HB5 which was recently approved by the Governor. The request is to fund a $5M competitive grant program for shelter providers to pay for capital involved with increasing capacity to serve the increase in unsheltered individuals. The aim of the Montana Coalition to Solve Homelessness is to contribute to state policy, a goal that would increase statewide resources to connect individuals to housing, shelter, and other resources. These dedicated efforts come from a network of professionals whose work in their respective cities will ripple through the state.
