Dear supporters,
Recently, the Mayor declared a state of emergency regarding homelessness and urban camping in Missoula. We at the Poverello Center are always humbled by the outpouring of support from the Missoula community. We want to thank you all for your contributions to our mission, and prepare you for what comes next.
The Poverello Center is working hard to re-open the Johnson Street emergency shelter and provide continued resources to neighbors facing homelessness in Missoula. We know this additional shelter option was needed yesterday, and we want to make sure to have everything in place before we open the doors for, what sounds like, at least the next 12 months. We are working to make adjustments to bathroom and shower amenities, hire and train staff, and be thoughtful around how the shelter will operate now that it is not ONLY a winter warming shelter. We are optimistic that the shelter will provide a safe and secure option for our community members living unsheltered in the coming weeks.
In the meantime, the Poverello Center is committed to our mission to offer food, shelter, help, and hope for all. While our shelter routinely offers overnight safety, even to capacity, our Homeless Outreach Team (HOT) continues to connect with members of our community who face houselessness, and bridges the gaps between individuals and resources. This summer, we are highlighting HOT as a resource for businesses and individuals. HOT does amazing, constant work, and makes an incredible difference in the lives of people in our community.
We know that autumn and a re-opening of the Johnson Street Shelter sound far away, but they are coming quickly. We are thrilled at the chance to support more people in our community, and we ask for the community’s support in return. To contribute to our efforts, please consider donating to or volunteering with the Poverello Center!
Thank you for the outpouring of kindness in recent months, and for your faith that the Poverello Center can continue to assist our community.
Sincerely,
Jill Bonny, MSW
Executive Director of the Poverello Center
