Navigating Solutions with Jill Bonny | Preparing for Winter – A Community Effort in Missoula

As another Montana winter roars around us, our staff at the Poverello Center and Johnson Street Shelter are stepping up to meet the growing demand for safe, warm spaces. With temperatures plunging, the need for shelter is at an all-time high, and we are deeply grateful for the community’s support in tackling the challenges ahead.

This winter, the Johnson Street Shelter has seen nightly guest numbers surge to between 170 and 180 individuals. Thanks to funding from the City of Missoula and the efforts of incredible volunteers and staff over the holiday season, we now have 165 new beds ready to provide a comfortable place for people to rest.

While our sleeping capacity is being stretched, we’re using overflow spaces to ensure no one is left out in the cold. This surge in numbers, however, underscores the pressing need for additional resources and creative solutions.

One of the ways we’re finding solutions is through community partnerships. Local faith organizations have stepped forward, offering small sections of their buildings as overnight warming spaces during extreme weather. These spaces will be staffed by Poverello Center team members, ensuring our guests feel supported and that we minimize the impact on surrounding neighborhoods.

Collaboration has always been at the heart of our mission, and this winter is no different. By working together with local businesses, faith groups, and volunteers, we’re ensuring that no one is left behind during Montana’s harshest months.

As we brace for the colder weeks ahead, it’s a perfect time to reflect on how each of us can help. While many of us enjoy the warmth of our homes, there are neighbors who desperately need cold-weather essentials like coats, boots, snow pants, and outdoor gear. With the increase in shelter guests, we’re also in urgent need of toiletries, toilet paper, and shower supplies. Every donation, no matter the size, helps create a stronger, more compassionate Missoula.

For 50 years, the Poverello Center has faced Montana winters alongside this community, offering food, shelter, help, and hope to our most vulnerable neighbors. As we navigate the challenges of this season, we thank you for being part of this journey and for ensuring no one is forgotten this winter.

If you’re ready to make a difference, please consider donating today and help us keep Missoula warm and safe.
